Update: New Hope For Handmade Industry in Lead Law Exceptions

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced its plans to strengthen and clarify exemptions to its recent Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, to prevent the law from unfairly disabling the thriving USA handmades industry In my previous post calling for action regarding the HR4040 lead safety act, I explained that small businesses would be severely impacted by the new law. Though we can all applaud the commission’s efforts to establish safety in toys, it’s clear that small craftsmen represented not the problem but the safe alternative for parents seeking safer options for their children. But steep testing fees in the range of $4,000 and strict labeling requirements in the new law spelled certain doom for such small manufacturers
