When you make your own handmade paper bags, you provide yourself with a ready supply of gift bags for any occasion. Pass out party favors in small gift sacks, and give holiday presents to friends and family in larger bags. Make several of these on a rainy day so you will never lack a gift bag when you need one.
1
Lay a piece of decorative paper (cut it large enough to cover the bottom portion of the box) on a surface with the decorative side down. Place the box on its side top of the paper.
2
Fold the long edges of the paper around the sides of the box, and use glue or double-stick tape to seal the paper onto itself to make a rectangular paper tube around the box. Push the box inside the paper tube back and forth gently to ensure that you can remove it. Crease the edges of the box. Slip the box to one side of the paper so the open edges of the paper will overlap enough to cover the bottom of the box. (Think of wrapping a box with gift wrap.)
3
Push the two sides of the paper on one end toward each other so they lie flat against the box, slightly overlapping. Tape or glue these together. Crease the edges of the resulting triangles. Fold the triangle points toward each other, and tape or glue them down. Look at the bottom of the box to ensure that it resembles a wrapped package. Use other wrapping techniques if desired.
4
Remove the box from the paper to have an empty box shape folded in the paper. Use the scissors to trim the top portion of the paper to the desired size for the finished gift bag.
5
Punch two holes into the bag 1/2 inch from the top on one of the long sides with 2 inches between the holes. Repeat on the opposite long edge of the bag. Tie a strand of ribbon into each of the holes on the same side of the bag, and repeat with the second ribbon on the other side. Decorate the bag with pencils, markers or stickers if desired.
